ANNOUNCEMENT & PURPOSE OF POSITION
Pottawattamie County Conservation is seeking enthusiastic and safety-conscious individuals to join our team as a Snowcat Operator for the upcoming ski season. This is a seasonal position that runs from December through March, or the duration of the ski season.

The Snowcat Operator is responsible for the safe operation and light maintenance of a snowcat to create quality snow surfaces for skiing and riding to support day-to-day operations and special events. Work will be performed in both team and individual settings and under but with limited supervision from the Outdoor Operations Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Groom terrain for skiing and riding

  • Responsible for consistent grooming, creating clean lines on the slopes and effectivelycleaning up pattern discrepancies that result in crooked lines and/or turn marks

  • Assist with moving snow in order to provide adequate snow coverage over skiable terrain
  • Ability to maintain grooming standards including at night on uneven terrain and in adverse weather conditions
  • Work closely and communicate with snow making team on snow conditions and timing of work performed
  • Perform general maintenance of the snowcats and inform supervisors of any issues
  • Ability to communicate, follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to work in collaboration with others to achieve team goals
  • Ability to remain focused, organized, flexible, and detail-oriented
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures and exercises caution when working
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of conservation programs and related fields are preferred

  • General knowledge of heavy equipment and related components

  • Adequate ability in the use of common hand tools and power equipment regularly utilized for large equipment and vehicle maintenance

  • Demonstrated sound judgement in the safe and reliable operation of heavy equipment on steep, uneven terrain

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to multitask; ability to use strong interpersonal and customer service skills using tact, patience and courtesy; ability to pay close attention to detail and to effectively organize time and anticipate, plan and successfully respond to changing circumstances

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding sensitive information

  • Ability to make arithmetic computations; experience in the use of maintenance logs

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, Board members, supervisors, and the general public

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES
  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Experience operating heavy equipment including uneven terrain and at night, preferred
