Primary Purpose of this Position:

Perform all facets of inspection, and evaluate materials, processes, and workmanship to assure compliance with DWS procedures as well as applicable specifications, provisions, and codes.

In addition to this, the candidate will fabricate steel parts for structural, plate, and misc. steel assemblies per shop drawings and DWS quality requirements as needed

Essential Job Functions:

1. Perform dimensional and visual inspection of sub-assemblies, assemblies, processes, and final product. Perform first-article inspection, in-process inspection, and final inspection of fabrication processes and finished product.
2. Perform inspection of incoming raw materials and other purchased materials.
3. Perform/coordinate non-destructive testing to ensure compliance with established specifications, or as requested to support production operations.
4. Document all inspections and maintain appropriate records.
5. Perform calibration/verification procedures on all precision instruments in the shops.
6. Assist in the evaluation/certification and training of production personnel as instructed by the Quality Assurance Supervisor to meet production needs.
7. Fabricate material as needed based on DWS workload.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Good overall knowledge of steel fabrication practices and procedures, and good knowledge of applicable codes and specifications (AISC, AWS, etc.).
2. Ability to read and understand DWS shop drawings.
3. Ability to work without supervision. Possess superior initiative and ambition.
4. Ability to pass an AWS D1.1 1" unlimited 1G FCAW weld test.
5. Ability to pass an AWS D1.1 3/8" limited 1G GMAW weld test.
6. Ability to fabricate (fit/weld) structural and miscellaneous material per DWS standards and all applicable codes.
7. Ability to operate forklifts, jib cranes, and overhead cranes in order to move materials.
8. Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Physical Demands:

1. Stand FREQUENTLY over the course of the 8 to 12-hour work shift.
2. Walk CONTINUOUSLY over the course of the 8 to 12-hour work shift.
3. Sit only during the break and lunch periods.
4. Lift weights up to 30 pounds FREQUENTLY from floor to head, which includes the various tools and blocks utilized in the process of performing the usual work duties during the 8 to 12-hour work shift.
5. Lift weights up to 70 pounds OCCASIONALLY from knee to waist, which includes the various tools utilized in the process of performing the usual work duties during the 8 to 12-hour work shift.
6. Carry weights noted above distances ranging from a few feet to 60 feet.
7. Climb OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY up and down steps, ladders, onto material, or onto conveyors.
8. Stoop or crouch OCCASIONALLY while performing the regular job duties. The position will be held continuously for a few seconds to 15 minutes, depending upon the job.
9. Kneel in the commission of job duties OCCASIONALLY, depending upon the job.
10. Crawl OCCASIONALLY up to 5 feet to access tools, materials, etc.
11. Reach forward FREQUENTLY to perform job duties or to retrieve tools. The employee will OCCASIONALLY be required to reach to full forward extension.
12. Reach overhead OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to guide material attached to the cranes, to attach the chains from the crane to the material, to locate blocks, or to saw blocks.
13. Push and pull material attached to an overhead crane or jib crane OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to properly guide into place. Force varies up to 35 pounds.
14. Pull hand over hand OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to pull chain through material. Force varies up to 70 pounds.
15. Balance OCCASIONALLY to climb ladders and to walk on steel beams. Employee will not be working at unprotected heights.
16. Gross finger dexterity skills to operate the various tools and equipment utilized in the course of standard job duties. A trigger squeeze motion is required to operate the grinders. Fine finger dexterity is not required.

Non-Material Handling Demands

1. Employee is expected to work 40 hours a week. However, hours including overtime and weekends may be required based on Drake-Williams Steel's needs.
2. Hear sufficiently to be aware of safety issues
3. Visual ability to read and interpret shop drawings. Safety glasses are required in the shop area.
4. Exposure to heat, cold, wet and humid conditions in the shop area OCCASIONALLY.
5. Exposure to fumes, odors and dusts in the shop area OCCASIONALLY.
6. Exposure to solvents, greases, oils, and coolants OCCASIONALLY.
7. Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment. PPE includes safety shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats,

Tools Required:

Pencil, Tape Measure, Markers, Chainsaw, Grab Hooks, Pry-Bar, Ladders, Remote Control, Chains, Weld Helmets, Welding Tools, Torches and Grinders.

Machines Utilized:

Overhead Crane, Jib Crane, Gantry Crane, Pallets, Transfers, Welders, and Forklifts.

Experience and Education Required:

1. Minimum of 3 years experience in the structural steel or similar industry.
2. General inspection knowledge of AWS, NACE, SSPC, and other applicable codes.
3. Certification in NDT preferred, but not required.
4. Minimum of six months of experience working as a welder for a steel fabricator or manufacturer, or a one-year degree or certificate in welding technology from a qualified trade school or college.
